TAHMO participated in the ICCP Africa Workshop 2026 at the University of Nairobi

Across Sub-Saharan Africa, access to high-resolution and reliable weather data remains a major challenge yet it is critical for agriculture, disaster preparedness, and climate resilience. Addressing this gap requires not only advanced technology but also strong partnerships and robust ground-based data systems.

The OSIRIS Project (Weather Intelligence for Africa) is a transformative initiative working to meet this need. Funded by the Gates Foundation, the project brings together TAHMO and TomorrowNow to deliver accurate, localized weather intelligence across the region.

 

A New Approach to Weather Intelligence

At the heart of OSIRIS is the integration of advanced weather modelling with a growing network of ground-based sensors. By combining these, the project produces more precise and locally relevant weather data that supports decision-making in agriculture and climate risk management.

This means the data is not just scientifically advanced but also reflects real conditions on the ground, making it more useful for farmers, planners and communities. 

The Power of Collaboration

The success of OSIRIS lies in its strong partnership model:

TAHMO manages stations installation, maintenance, and dashboard development.

TomorrowNow coordinates the project, leads data reanalysis and validation of weather stations.

Together, we ensure that technology and the data ecosystem are aligned to deliver meaningful impact.

From Sensors to Insights

Significant progress has already been made on the ground. The project has already deployed specialized instruments such as disdrometers and Arable sensors, significantly improving data collection. In Kenya, manual rainfall measurements are also being used to validate and improve accuracy

To make this data accessible, the OSIRIS dashboard provides real-time data visualisation and easy comparisons, helping users quickly understand patterns and trends.

Ensuring Data Quality and Reliability

Reliable data requires continuous effort. TAHMO teams are actively engaged in maintaining sensor networks, implementing quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) protocols, and ensuring uninterrupted data flow across stations.

Country representatives in Kenya, Rwanda, and Tanzania play a key role in overseeing field operations, ensuring that installations are functioning effectively and that data collection remains consistent.
